I advocate for the use of Caya Gel – instead of the use of (traditional) Nonoxynol-9 based spermicide – to avoid abrasive chemicals and skin irritation. Caya Gel is the ‘modern stuff’ that you can now use with female barrier contraception. The thick gel provides the added seal necessary for effective barrier contraceptive use, and the lactic acid reduces the pH-value of vaginal mucus making it inhospitable to sperm.
Possible bonus feature?
You may find that it helps to prevent you getting a vaginal infection following sex (due to the increase in acidity).
Caya Gel offers similar, if not superior, effectiveness to N-9 without the side-effects.

This 60ml tube provides more applications than leading typical spermicide brands.
You need to use 1/4 tsp of Caya Gel inside the FemCap (the dome and brim), and 1/2 tsp on the flip-side (the groove, between the outside of the dome, and the brim.)
The tip of the cervix should be resting in the gel, and the barrier should be completely covering the cervix. As such, the cervix is covered and closed twice: first by the silicone membrane of the barrier, then by the gel. These two physical barriers prevent sperm from entering the cervix.
Please (overly) familiarise yourself with the instructions (included in the product’s packing) for the use with your FemCap to ensure proper usage.
Further details
– Because Caya Gel has a three month expiry date from the time you open it (make sure you note this down somewhere) you’ll need to purchase at least 8x tubes over the two year lifetime of your FemCap. This will depend on how often you are sexual active.
– Caya Gel formula is water-based. It is effective with silicone and natural latex rubber barriers.
– Store in a cool and dry place.
